Sony RX100 V XAVC-S does work with the latest version of Adobe Premiere Pro. However, in some situations users still need to process “transcoded editing”. If for any reason you need to re-encode them to ProRes or DNxHD codec for a fast and fluid workflow with Premiere, you may wish to read this tutorial.

Your computer may well be able to handle Sony RX100 V XAVC-S files fine in Premiere. In my experience at the busy post-production house I work at, even our top spec Mac Pros will struggle very hard with a half hour or hour show comprised of XAVC-S .mp4 or XDCAM .mxf media. Problems don’t just occur in playback either, Premiere can really struggle just navigating around a project with lots of non-optimized media.

They are both formats that the computer must work hard to decode and playback, and yes of course you can render previews but then you must re-render each time you make a change to the file.

In this situation, we would recommend converting Sony RX100 V XAVC-S files to optimized DNxHD or ProRes media before start editing in Premiere.
